Counting From Different Starting Points

Activity: How Many?

You will need: an empty container (e.g. a tin can, a plastic box), some coins, buttons or blocks

Tell your child that you are going to drop some items in the tin/box one at a time. They have to count how many there are by listening to the sound the items make. After dropping a few items, pause and ask your child how many they have counted so far.

Add more items in the container making sure that your child remembers to start counting from where you stopped the first time. (So, if you initially placed five items in the container, tell your child to ‘hold’ the number five in their head as that is the number they need to start counting from when you add more things in the box.)

Check that your child has counted correctly by letting them take out the items from the container and counting them.
