Maths 3-5

Activity: FINDING ONE MORE OR ONE LESS

Learning Goal:

Children need opportunities to see and begin to generalise the ‘one more than/one less than’ relationship between sequential numbers.

Introduce the topic by watching One More One Less

Support your child in recognising that if they add one, they will get the next number, or if one is taken away, they will have the previous number.

You can also watch: Numberblocks 2.6: Just Add One to teach the concept of ‘one more’ and Numberblocks 2.7: Ten Green Bottles to teach the concept of ‘one less’.

Challenge:

Play Chopper Squad. Select One More or Less 1 to 20. Your child will be asked to find one more or one less of a given number. Demonstrate to the how to use the game’s number grid. They need to count forwards to find one more, starting from the number given. If they are asked to find one less, they need to count backwards from the number given.

Number Song:

End the session by practising rote counting to 50: Count 1 to 50.
